Louisburg, NC – Franklin County Republicans focused on the May 14 North Carolina run-off election, current activities in local and state government, and upcoming district and state conventions during the party’s annual convention, Saturday, March 16.
During a run-off election May 14, Republican voters will select candidates for lieutenant governor, state auditor and the U.S. House of Representatives. Hal Weatherman, candidate for lieutenant governor, emphasized the importance of voting during the primary run-off so all North Carolina Republicans have a voice in selecting the candidates.
Convention speakers included Kelly Daughtry and Brad Knott. Both are vying to represent North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District in Washington, D.C. Daughtry, an attorney from Smithfield, emphasized her ability to negotiate. She cited her experience in family court where she seeks solutions during child custody battles. Daughtry indicates her priorities will be to secure the border, reduce inflation and refocus foreign policy.
Knott, a former Federal prosecutor, focused on the unsustainable $34-plus trillion in U.S. debt, which, he said, already has saddled each child with more than $200,000 in future liabilities and continues to explode at the rate of $1 trillion of additional U.S. debt every 100 days. He said many policies need course correction, such as the policy that provides immigrants with more government benefits than homeless citizens. In addition, Knott said he wants to use his skills as a prosecutor who knows Federal law as well as government processes to help Congress fix a weaponized Department of Justice.

Locally, Franklin County Sheriff Kevin White indicated the sheriff’s department has continued to reduce position vacancy rates. It currently has only two openings, down from 18. He recognized Matthew Winslow, Republican member of the North Carolina House of Representatives representing the 7th district, for helping the department secure a $450,000 grant for specialized equipment.
Register of Deeds Brandi Smith Brinson announced that Franklin County now has access to birth and death records from any county in North Carolina, which will add convenience when a citizen needs a certified copy.
Rep. Winslow noted that, in the state, parental rights have been strengthened, children have been protected against gender-affirming medical mutilation, and new support has fostered growth in trade vocations.
The Franklin County resident indicated that North Carolina is considered one of the nation’s best states to live and conduct business, based on Republican-led income tax reductions. Winslow said the Republican-led legislature overcame the $5 billion budget deficit left by Democrats and has increased the state’s emergency reserves.
The Franklin County Republican Ladies Group, now the Franklin County Patriots, was recognized for its action-focused leadership. Resolutions acknowledged founders Rose Holmes, Ginger Pugh, Jessica Kuusinen, and Ann McKeon. The party also recognized Melissa Cogliati for her time, talent and generosity, including the ability to conduct important meetings at The Hudson Manor.
The party recognized Grady Smith Macon, recently departed, for his service to the Franklin County Republican Party and his role as president of Tax Monitors, where he provided a voice for taxpayers.
Party Chair Ed Strickland announced the District 13 Convention will be at 10 a.m. April 13, at 101 S. Steele St., Sanford. The State Convention will be May 23 through May 26 at the Koury Convention Center, Greensboro.
